Burberry Reimagines British Style for Spring 2027

Category: THE ICONS

For Spring/Summer 2027, Burberry brings together British heritage, youthful imperfection and the unmistakable artistry of textile designer Celia Birtwell.

A British Icon, Reconsidered

Burberry closed London Fashion Week on September 21 with a Spring/Summer 2027 collection that looked toward British heritage without becoming trapped by it.

Under chief creative officer Daniel Lee, the house collaborated with legendary British textile designer Celia Birtwell, whose distinctive prints helped shape the visual identity of British fashion in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The show took place at Chelsea College of Arts, where Birtwell once taught. Vogue

The collaboration gave Burberry’s familiar visual language a noticeably more personal character.

Rather than treating heritage as something untouchable, the collection asked a more interesting question: what happens when an icon is allowed to become imperfect?

The Burberry Check Meets Celia Birtwell

Few patterns are as immediately recognizable as the Burberry check.

For Spring 2027, Birtwell’s hand-drawn florals, vines and illustrations were introduced across that familiar grid, transforming one of luxury fashion’s most established motifs into something more expressive.

Florals appeared across shirting, shorts and outerwear, while some of Birtwell’s drawings were transformed into three-dimensional embellishments and badges. The collection also expanded into vivid shades including blue and orange. Vogue

The result demonstrated how collaboration can work at its best.

Birtwell’s contribution did not erase Burberry’s identity. Instead, it introduced another layer to it.

The check remained recognizable—but suddenly it felt less rigid.

The Beauty of Imperfection

One of the most interesting ideas running through the collection was imperfection.

Luxury is often associated with flawless surfaces, immaculate tailoring and complete control. Burberry moved in a slightly different direction this season.

Wrinkled textures, washed denim, softened surfaces and deliberately less-polished finishes appeared throughout the collection. Lee described his preference for clothes that do not feel completely perfect, connecting that imperfection with a cooler and more youthful attitude. Vogue

That idea feels particularly relevant to contemporary luxury.

The value of an object does not always come from looking untouched.

Sometimes craftsmanship becomes more visible when texture, movement and individuality are allowed to remain.

Beyond the Trench Coat

The trench coat remains one of Burberry’s most powerful symbols, but Spring 2027 demonstrated the importance of building a broader universe around an icon.

Outerwear was still central, yet the collection expanded confidently into dresses, denim, technical pieces, footwear and more expressive silhouettes.

The styling also moved between different periods and references. Elements reminiscent of the 1970s appeared alongside technical clothing and contemporary shapes, creating a wardrobe that felt distinctly British without relying on a single nostalgic image. Vogue

That evolution matters for a heritage house.

An iconic product can establish a brand’s identity, but it cannot be the only reason the next generation becomes interested in it.

Heritage With a Younger Attitude

Burberry’s recent direction has increasingly emphasized its British identity while seeking a stronger connection with younger luxury consumers.

Spring 2027 continued that approach.

The collection combined recognizable house codes with unexpected cultural references, including British rapper Central Cee appearing on the runway. Vogue’s review characterized the collection as more expansive than the trench-heavy focus of some recent seasons. Vogue

It created an interesting contrast.

Burberry is a house with more than a century and a half of history, yet its relevance depends on continually finding new ways to make that history feel alive.

For this season, the answer was not to reject tradition.

It was to loosen it.

Why Heritage Still Matters

Fashion moves quickly, but luxury often derives its power from continuity.

A recognizable check, a particular silhouette or a familiar piece of outerwear can carry decades of cultural meaning. The challenge for established houses is deciding how much of that history should remain unchanged.

Burberry Spring 2027 offered one possible answer.

Preserve the codes people recognize, but allow artists and designers to reinterpret them.

Through Birtwell’s illustrations, Lee’s contemporary direction and the house’s established craftsmanship, familiar symbols became the foundation for something more emotional and less predictable. Vogue

The XLG Perspective

At XLG, we believe true icons endure because they can evolve.

The strongest luxury pieces are recognizable without becoming static. They carry history, but they also acquire new meaning through the people who design, wear and reinterpret them.

Burberry’s Spring 2027 collection demonstrates that heritage and experimentation do not need to exist on opposite sides of fashion.

Sometimes the most effective way to protect an icon is to allow it to change.
