Milan Fashion Week SS27: The New Season Begins

Category: RUNWAY

As Milan steps into the spotlight for Spring/Summer 2027, fashion’s attention turns once again to a city where heritage, craftsmanship and new ideas continue to shape the language of modern luxury.

A New Chapter Begins in Milan

Milan Fashion Week returned from September 22 to 28, bringing together some of the most influential names in Italian and international fashion for the Spring/Summer 2027 season.

This year’s schedule arrived with a noticeable sense of transition. Following several seasons of creative-director changes across major luxury houses, many designers are now moving beyond their introductions and beginning to establish a clearer identity within the brands they lead.

Rather than focusing purely on novelty, the new season is becoming a test of consistency: how can historic fashion houses respect their heritage while creating something relevant for a new generation?

That balance between history and evolution has always been one of Milan’s greatest strengths. Vogue

Prada Opens the Conversation

One of the most significant changes to the Milan schedule came from Prada.

The Italian house opened the fashion week schedule, moving from its familiar mid-week position and immediately placing Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons at the center of the season’s conversation. Vogue

For Spring/Summer 2027, Prada turned its attention toward one of fashion’s most familiar garments: the skirt.

Across the collection, skirts appeared in an extensive range of interpretations—from restrained A-line and pleated silhouettes to embroidered surfaces, experimental materials and more eccentric constructions.

Rather than reinventing clothing through complexity alone, the collection explored how an ordinary garment can become a platform for individuality.

It reflected a wider idea increasingly visible in contemporary luxury: familiar pieces do not necessarily need to disappear for fashion to move forward. Sometimes, changing the proportion, material or context of something recognizable is enough to make it feel new again. Vogue

The Human Touch in an Age of Technology

Milan’s opening day also extended far beyond the traditional runway.

Vogue World: Milano took over the historic Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, bringing its global fashion event to Italy after previous editions in New York, London, Paris and Los Angeles.

The 2026 edition focused on craftsmanship and the role of the human touch at a time when technology and artificial intelligence are increasingly influencing creative industries.

Through different thematic acts, the event explored Italian fashion from Renaissance craftsmanship and industrial production to cinema, contemporary technology and visions of fashion’s future. Vogue

The location itself carried particular significance. The Galleria represents the intersection of Milanese history, architecture, commerce and luxury—a fitting environment for an event examining what “Made in Italy” means today.

Beyond the Established Names

While global houses naturally command attention, Milan Fashion Week is also becoming an important platform for emerging perspectives.

The SS27 calendar combines established names including Prada, Gucci, Fendi, Bottega Veneta, Dolce & Gabbana, Ferragamo, Missoni and others with designers attempting to build new identities within and outside the traditional luxury system. Vogue

Moschino is among the houses entering another significant chapter, with Simone Rizzo and Loris Messina—founders of Sunnei—making their first runway presentation as the brand’s creative directors this season. Vogue

These changes matter because modern luxury is no longer defined only by heritage.

Consumers increasingly encounter fashion through culture, digital media, collaborations and rapidly changing creative communities. For established houses, the challenge is therefore not simply to preserve recognizable codes, but to give those codes contemporary meaning.

Luxury in a Changing Market

Behind the energy of fashion week lies a more complicated commercial environment.

Luxury companies continue to navigate softer demand and broader economic uncertainty, putting additional pressure on major houses to demonstrate why their products, craftsmanship and creative identities remain relevant. Reuters reported this week that the spectacular Milan and Paris runway calendar comes as luxury executives confront a difficult market backdrop. Reuters

That makes the runway more than spectacle.

A successful collection must create desire, reinforce brand identity and offer products that can eventually exist beyond photographs and social-media moments.

For Spring/Summer 2027, Milan therefore represents something larger than another seasonal change. It is an opportunity for the industry to demonstrate the enduring value of creativity and Italian craftsmanship while adapting to a luxury customer whose expectations continue to evolve.

The XLG Perspective

At XLG, we believe the most compelling luxury exists where timeless design meets contemporary culture.

Milan SS27 is already showing that the future of fashion does not necessarily require abandoning the past. Heritage can be reinterpreted, familiar silhouettes can acquire new meaning, and craftsmanship can remain relevant even as technology transforms the creative world around it.

The new season has begun—and Milan is once again reminding us why fashion continues to evolve without losing its history.
